Project Background

The Shippensburg Area School District selected Reynolds to develop and construct a guaranteed energy savings project at all district buildings, including:
• Shippensburg Area Senior High School
• Shippensburg Area Middle School
• Shippensburg Area Intermediate School
• James Burd Elementary School
• Nancy Grayson Elementary School
• District Administrative Offices

The high school was converted from electric heat to natural gas heat. The district’s natural gas consumption in the first year of performance only increased by 0.1% even though an additional 300,000 sf of building space was being heated by natural gas. The district exceeded the first-year guaranteed savings by more than 50%.

Reynolds also provided retro-commissioning services at the Shippensburg Area Intermediate School. This building was constructed in 2009 and had a significantly higher than expected Energy Usage Intensity (EUI) for a facility of that age. Reynolds uncovered several areas of simultaneous heating and cooling, circulator pumps running uncontrolled, and numerous other controls issues. Reynolds recommended solutions and assisted the district in saving more than $31,000 per year at that facility alone.
