The Altoona Area School District chose Reynolds to manage construction of its new high school. Reynolds will provide pre-construction, bidding, construction, and close-out phase services. The project will be out for bid in early 2018, break ground in May 2018, and the school will open in fall of 2020.
The existing high school consists of two buildings, one constructed in 1972 and the other in 1927, linked by a series of pedestrian bridges. The 395,000-square-foot facility takes up two blocks within the city of Altoona. Construction of the replacement school will be faced with the challenges of a tight urban context, a heavy slope, and maintaining ongoing school operations.
The new 440,000-square-foot school will accommodate 2,400 students and will include a theater, business center, an outdoor classroom, and a rooftop greenhouse.
“What Reynolds brings to the table is the ability to handle the size and scope of a project like this,” said Dr. Charles Prijatelj, district superintendent. “We feel they bring the expertise with their team to cover all the facets of the project better. They have people on-site throughout daily construction; they have guys to really run the numbers to give us strong estimates of costs and savings; they have people who understand the logistics of moving kids from site to site.”
