(Harrisburg, PA) – Anthony Worrall, president of emergency services and restoration company Reynolds Restoration Services, participated in a webcast about mold in schools entitled “Rain, Rain Will Go Away, but Mold Will Stay.” The Pennsylvania Association of School Business Officials (PASBO) presented the live webcast to an audience of more than 50 districts on August 9, 2018.
PASBO Director of Leadership and Development Wayne McCullough, Cheltenham School District Director of Facilities and Maintenance Mark Brooks, and retired facilities director Craig Boltz joined Worrall for the 1 1/2-hour webcast that educated school officials about what mold is, how to reduce its presence in schools, and how to treat it if it gets a chance to grow.
Worrall urged participants to go a step beyond treating any visible mold. “It’s important to treat the situation or condition that caused the mold,” he said. “Don’t just get rid of the mold; figure out what’s causing it. Think about what you can’t see.”
The four presenters shared tips that facility directors can implement immediately, including:
- Regularly visit all areas of your building, especially those that don’t see a lot of traffic such as closets and storage areas. Use your eyes, nose, and ears to detect unusual smells or spots and take immediate action to correct any problems you find.
- Evaluate the way you use your heating, ventilation, and air conditioning system in the fight against moisture. Consider raising chilled water temperature, closing outside dampers, or raising building temperature set points to lower the humidity to inhibit mold growth.
- Custodians are an important member of your mold prevention team. Train them to look for excess moisture and evidence of mold growth and to immediately report their findings.
