(Harrisburg, PA) – Renovations to Forge Road Elementary School in the Palmyra Area School District wrapped up just in time for the new school year. Between April and August 2018, Reynolds served as the contractor to replace the ceilings and floors, classroom cabinetry, lighting, windows, kitchen equipment, and heating and cooling systems.
“This renovation is a commitment to stewardship of our environmental and financial resources,” said Darcy Brenner-Smith, the district’s Director of Business Affairs. “The design-build process allowed us to recycle what we already had while incorporating efficient equipment that will improve the learning environment for our students and staff.”
District colors of orange and black were incorporated into the floor tiles and a large new mural covers a freshly painted wall to boost school spirit. The character of the 60-year-old building’s brick walls remains, but the hallways and classrooms are brighter, healthier, and more energy efficient thanks to three new natural gas boilers and fresh air ventilators that improve air quality. For its new equipment, the district received a utility rebate check for almost $19,000 and is expected to save more than $4,600 annually on heating and cooling costs for the school.
In addition to the $6 million project at the elementary school, Reynolds completed a $12 million addition and renovations program at Palmyra Area Middle School in August 2017. Both projects were completed using a hybrid construction methodology, which combines multiple procurement methods to reduce risks, eliminate change orders, and expedite the schedule.
“This project is the perfect example of how beneficial hybrid construction is for districts,” said Rick Evans, president of Reynolds Energy Services. “We finished the Forge Road project in five months over the summer. Using traditional methods, it would have been a 12- to 18-month project that required moving the students to temporary classrooms. The district’s savings from the middle school project was more than the total cost of this project, resulting in a savings to the taxpayers, and the students came back to a like-new school after their summer break.”
