How Do Preconstruction Services Add Value to a Project?

A Penny Saved is a Penny Earned: The Value of a Preconstruction Team When it comes to ‘a penny saved is a penny earned,’ preconstruction teams know that savings uncovered with skilled estimating and bidding services can be worth their weight in gold. That’s why Reynolds’ preconstruction team, with 240 years of combined experience, scours procurement options, drawings, plans and schedules to uncover ways to put money back into school districts’ pockets, saving up to millions of dollars and putting funds back in budgets for projects that had previously been bumped from the “must do” list. Phoenixville Area School District (PASD) experienced the value of Reynolds’ preconstruction services team during the construction of the new Phoenixville Area Middle School and District Administration Office (DAO), when Reynolds’ preconstruction solutions provided the district with enough cost reductions to fund turf athletic fields, tackling site and schedule challenges along the way. Solving Challenges When PASD was first provided with the lowest conceptual estimate of over $70 million for project costs by a competing firm for both the middle school and administrative offices, it looked as though the idea of turf athletic fields would have to be placed on the back burner to devote […]

Employee Spotlight: Todd Buzard

Meet Todd Buzard, Vice President of Preconstruction Services Q: What is your position at Reynolds and what do you do? A: I am the Vice President of Preconstruction Services. I oversee a department of six that puts together detailed estimates and preliminary designs to control construction costs. Q: How long have you worked at Reynolds? A: I’ve been with Reynolds since its inception in 1994, so I’ll be celebrating my 25-year “Reynolds-versary” this year along with the company. Q: How has the industry changed since you first started? A: Technology has changed everything. When I started, there were no personal computers, company issued cell phones, or email. There was a single huge IBM main frame computer located across the street and you had a computer terminal at your desk. When you wanted to print an estimate, you had to go across the street to get the printout. Q: What is an accomplishment at Reynolds you’re most proud of and why? A: Being a part of the team that built the Bedford Springs Resort was a huge accomplishment. It’s a beautiful, iconic resort with historical significance, but it almost wasn’t restored to its former glory because of bumps along the way. […]

Value Engineering: How to Reduce Costs without Sacrificing Project Vision

Why VE Is Integral in Construction Projects At Reynolds, we understand vision and design often drive a project, particularly for school districts and other organizations who want to increase comfort and improve aesthetics in new and renovated buildings. New trends in design, combined with the integration of technology into buildings and advances in building materials, though, can sometimes add to overall costs and expenses, putting projects over budget. This can often lead to frustration and anxiety for owners, as they may feel they have to sacrifice their vision and reduce the scope of the project in order to complete a project on-budget (and even on-time). Rather than immediately scaling back on scope and building program, or reactively cutting costs that may impact the overall value and the architect’s Design Intent, Reynolds works with our clients and design team partners to identify ways to achieve project success without sacrificing the project vision through a process called Value Engineering. What Is Value Engineering? Value Engineering, or VE, is a method of evaluating the components of a construction project to identify ways to provide for the intended design, use (program)– or vision – by using alternative materials and systems to reduce the overall […]
